Do I have to use a controller with a Sun Pump?

It depends on the specific pump and system. Some Sun Pumps can run directly from solar panels without a controller, and in an emergency you can get by without one.

That said, we always recommend using a controller whenever possible. A properly matched controller:

• Protects the pump from low voltage, overvoltage, and dry-run damage.

• Increases efficiency by making the most of available solar power.

• Provides a soft start to reduce wear on the motor.

• Offers helpful monitoring and automatic shutoff features.

Running without a controller may work short-term, but it puts extra stress on the pump and can shorten its lifespan. For best results and long-term reliability, every Sun Pump system should include a controller.
